Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapists facilitate independence
in life’s many activities.
Specialized evaluation and treatment enhances performance by compensating
for dysfunction, minimizing disability, and promoting health and
wellness. Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants
provide treatments which focus on basic or instrumental activities of
daily living (ADLs), cognitive/visual-perceptual skill remediation, sensory
integration, sensory re-education, equipment recommendations, mobility
and transfers, and neuromuscular re-education.
Specific education programs encompass making patients
aware of how the outcome of disease or injury affects their daily
life functioning. Treatment interventions are always made in conjunction
with education. Examples of this include energy conservation/work
simplification, ergonomic education for repetitive injury prevention,
hip precautions for completion of ADLs, stress management, use
of adaptive equipment, home safety adaptations or recommendations,
scar management and arthritic/diabetic/cardiac teaching.
