PET/CT
CT, or computed tomography, provides a high-quality image
of the body's internal structures and allows doctors to pinpoint
the location of abnormalities in tissue.
PET, or positron emission tomography, measures the body's metabolism
of glucose, a simple sugar used by cells for energy. Fast-growing
cancer cells use more glucose than healthy cells, thereby revealing
their size and growth rate on the scan.
When the two scans are combined, The PET/CT at St. Agnes gives our
physicians the detailed metabolic and structural information they need
to diagnose and determine the extent of various cancers, damage to cardiac
muscle and neurological disorders. The integration of PET and CT technology
into one image marks an important advance in diagnostic imaging.
