Surgical Oncology
The surgical oncology team at Saint Agnes takes an aggressive approach to cancer surgery with success rates comparable to the nation’s major cancer centers. This world-class group of surgeons is championing state-of-the-art techniques that enhance a patient’s chances for a cure, decreasing morbidity and mortality while preserving the best quality of life for patients. The team performs such procedures as:
- Aggressive cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy (IPHC) for patients with pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) mesothelioma, colorectal, appendix, primary peritoneal, ovarian and gastric cancer. This complex procedure is performed at only a few hospitals in the world; Saint Agnes’ nationally known surgeons have treated patients from all over the country as well as Canada.
- Treatment of esophageal cancer through a transhiatal or transthoracic approach.
- Breast conserving surgery to reduce the rate of mastectomy. At Saint Agnes, the breast-conserving approach is used in 75% of breast surgery cases, considerably higher than the national average of 55%. Breast reconstruction is encouraged when mastectomy is needed. The decision as to which reconstructive strategy is most appropriate is made with close patient participation to obtain the best possible results while maintaining the best quality of life.
- Mammary Ductoscopy allows surgeons to diagnose and biopsy early-stage breast tumors by inserting a microendoscope through the nipple.
Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS). Two state-of-the-art surgical suites with voice-activated and computer-controlled robotic arms provide a wide range of surgical alternatives such as, laparoscopic adrenalectomy, splenectomy, colon resection, liver resection, gastric and biliary bypass.
