Radiation Oncology—TomoTherapy
St. Agnes Cancer Center is the first hospital in the
mid-Atlantic and northeastern United States to install TomoTherapy, the
revolutionary, FDA-approved method that integrates treatment planning,
patient positioning and treatment delivery in one system.
TomoTherapy integrates
the delivery of real-time CT-imaging and intensity-modulated radiation
for more precise targeting of tumors, with minimal damage to healthy
tissue.
TomoTherapy delivers real-time CT image-guided radiation
therapy and Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). This slice-based
radiation therapy replaces the use of a two-dimensional, traditional
X-ray image with a 3-D CT image for precisely locating the desired treatment
area.
