Breast Cancer Treatment

The Breast Center at St. Agnes Hospital offers comprehensive and compassionate diagnosis and treatment for patients with breast malignancies.

Breast cancer starts when cells in the breast become abnormal and start dividing rapidly. Most breast cancers start with cells in the milk ducts, the tiny tubes that run from the lobules (glands that make breast milk) to the nipple.

Without effective treatment, these cancer cells continue to multiply, invading and destroying healthy breast tissue and eventually forming a tumor. Cancer cells can also break away from the tumor, travel to other organs and start new tumors.

At St. Agnes, we use mammography, ultrasound, MRI and minimally invasive diagnostic procedures for the diagnosis of breast cancer. We were one of the first hospitals in Maryland to perform stereotactic breast biopsy. These less invasive, more convenient procedures allow patients to quickly return to their daily activities.

Our Multidisciplinary Approach to Treatment

Our breast cancer treatment program emphasizes multidisciplinary care. Our team is comprised of general surgeons, plastic surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, radiologists and pathologists. Once you have received your diagnosis, our team reviews every detail of your case to determine the best approach for treatment.

Advances in Breast Cancer Treatment Options

St. Agnes offers the latest radiation techniques for breast cancer. The use of a large bore CT simulator for radiation treatment planning ensures the greatest ease and accuracy of radiation therapy.
