Roux-en-Y

The Roux-en-Y is the gold standard of weight-loss operations and the most widely performed procedure today, with more than 30 years of experience and results to support it.

During the operation, the digestive process is altered by surgically reducing the gastric reservoir to a fraction of its former size. The resultant pouch is then connected directly to the lower part of the small intestine, effectively bypassing those portions of the digestive tract where most calories and nutrients are absorbed.

At St. Agnes, 98 percent of Roux-en-Y procedures are performed using minimally invasive surgery, which takes about two hours. When laparoscopic approaches are not possible because of complex medical or surgical problems, the team will revert to an open bariatric procedure, requiring for to six hours to complete. Both approaches have demonstrated results of equal value. Most patients are hospitalized for three days.

After both Roux-en-Y and LAP-BAND, patients can usually resume work and other activities within three to four weeks or sooner.
