Surgical Residency: Training Program
The St. Agnes General Surgery Residency is
a five-year program, fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for
Graduate Medical Education through its Residency Review Committee in Surgery.
This academically oriented, community-based residency program is the second
oldest surgery residency in the country. Residents are offered a broad-based
surgical experience with exposure not only to the field of greater general
surgery, but also to all the surgical specialties.
The Department of Surgery now includes over 160
surgeons in 10 surgical
specialties. There are five full-time surgeons in the department
complimented by attending surgeons who are dedicated to the residency-training
program and are actively involved in the teaching program. There
are three chief residents in this columnar system of advancement
through the residency training. Medical students and Physician Assistant
students are part of the surgical team that works under the leadership
of the chief residents.
The surgical residency training program at St. Agnes provides outstanding opportunities for personal growth and incremental responsibility. There is intense involvement in the preoperative, operative and postoperative care of both the routine cases which one will see the most in surgical practice, as well as the most challenging cases that can be faced by the surgeon of the future. The training allows for
very broad, balanced exposure to General Surgery and to the various specialties.
Resident teams are exposed to work in the operating room, emergency department,
offices, clinics and critical care areas throughout the entire length
of the program.
The residents grow in their leadership and teaching responsibilities as they progress through the program, and receive the mentorship and didactic training required to nurture these skills.
In addition, they are exposed to a total number of surgical cases that
far exceeds the requirements for accreditation and board certification.
Medical Students
Medical students have been a part of St. Agnes’ training program
for more than six decades. Students are active participants in the training program and are well incorporated into the team. They also participate in the teaching conferences. In addition, there are conferences especially for the student. The opportunity for the residents to teach the students contributes significantly to the professional development of the resident as well as provides a vital service to the student.
Physician Assistants and Physician Assistants Students
The integration of physician assistants and physician assistant students into the surgical team is accomplished in such a manner that the ability of the surgical residents to achieve professional goals is facilitated and the physician assistants and physician assistant students have the opportunity to participate in a meaningful and satisfying fashion, enabling them to achieve their professional goals.
