Surgical Residency Program: Students
The Department of Surgery now includes over 160
surgeons in ten surgical
specialties. There are five full-time surgeons in the department
complimented by attending surgeons who are dedicated to the residency-training
program and are actively involved in the teaching program. There
are three chief residents in this columnar system of advancement through
the residency training. Medical students and Physician Assistant
students are part of the surgical team that works under the leadership
of the chief residents.
Medical Students
Medical students have been a part of St. Agnes’ training program
for more than six decades. Students from all over the world participate
in the training program. All are part of the surgical teams providing
clinical care of patients and participate in the full conference schedule with
the residents. There are also conferences designed specifically for just medical
students.
Physician Assistant Students
Physician Assistant students from several programs frequently choose
St. Agnes for their clinical rotation in surgery. During part of their
six-week rotations, they function as an integral part of the surgical
teams and also have special experience in the ICU, clinics, and offices
and on the orthopedic surgery service.
The St. Agnes General Surgery Residency is a five-year program, fully
accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education
through its Residency Review Committee in Surgery. This academically oriented,
community-based residency program is the second oldest surgery residency
in the country. Residents are offered a broad-based surgical experience
with exposure not only to the field of greater general surgery, but also
to all the surgical specialties.
