Medical Residency
Our Leadership
William
A. Valente, M.D., F.A.C.P.
Chairman, Department of Medicine
At
Saint Agnes Hospital we provide health care services to a wide spectrum
of patients drawn from the surrounding urban and suburban areas of Baltimore.
Our mission is best stated as "patients are our passion" and
our primary concern is the highest quality of patient care.
The basis of quality care invariably rests on high educational commitment. This is our departmental focus and the ultimate reason for our training program. We expect our medical residents to commit the time and effort needed to develop mature skills in physical diagnosis, history taking, diagnostic evaluation and self-motivated learning.
The physician educators and practitioners
at Saint Agnes represent a group of men and women selected for their
dedication and passion. While general medical care is at the core
of our curriculum, all the medical specialties are fully represented and
many of the teaching attendings maintain appointments in the nearby medical
schools in Baltimore and Washington D.C. Additionally, the hospital
administration has consistently supported our graduate medical education
programs. With a number of far reaching changes this year, we are well
on our way to reach the premier status in Baltimore as the best community-training
program.
Sapna Kuehl, M.D.,
F.A.C.P.
Program Director
As the Program Director at Saint Agnes Hospital, I am proud and privileged
to lead a team of gifted faculty as they precept and nurture each of our
housestaff, both personally and professionally. We view each resident individually,
trying our best to design an individualized educational experience that
addresses the unique personal goals of each physician.
My faculty and I believe that a collegial and supportive environment is the only environment where the highest quality medical education can occur; we strive for this every day, and the effort is very successful. We are extremely accessible to our residents and believe firmly in the value of mentorship and career guidance. Our residency produces physicians of the highest caliber who are happy and well prepared for whatever their future may hold: practice, fellowship, and beyond.
Deborah A. Som, M.D., F.A.C.P.
Associate Program Director
In the Ambulatory Care Department, we train our doctors in practicing comprehensive, evidence based medicine. Throughout their training, the residents maintain a continuity clinic that will give them the experience of following the same patients for three years. As they develop relationships with these patients, they learn about the many psychosocial factors that may affect a patient’s health, as well as, learn to manage a variety of complex medical conditions.
Education is always a priority, and the
clinical experience is complemented by regular lectures and journal
reviews. In our specialty center, residents are exposed to the many subspecialties
of internal medicine and get the opportunity to work closely with
highly regarded specialists. University of Maryland Medical School sends
students to train in our Ambulatory Center each month to get the outstanding
experience that our residents enjoy each day.
