History of Saint Agnes Hospital
Saint Agnes has a rich tradition that dates to 1862 when the hospital first opened. Its original mission was to provide nursing care of the poor. The facility moved to its present location in 1876 and was reorganized as a full-service hospital in 1906. Shortly thereafter, the residency program was established.
Today Saint Agnes Hospital is a full-service community teaching hospital with residency programs in a number of medical and surgical specialties. Its primary mission continues to be service of persons who are poor and those who are medically underserved.
The hospital is known in the state of Maryland for the highest quality of clinical care and consistently receives very high scores for JCAHO accreditation, the gold standard by which hospitals are rated.
Graduates of the residency training program are highly sought after for careers in primary care or for subspecialty fellowship positions in the top academic centers of the country. Saint Agnes is the home to the first Chest Pain Center in the world. The various departments are often participants in nationwide clinical trials such as C-Port, ALLHAT, I-ELCAP and GUSTO.
