The Latest Spine Treatments
The physicans at the Orthopaedic & Spine Institute use the latest technology to perform less invasive surgery and procedures so you can get back on your feet faster. For example, a new bone graft extender allows patients to avoid the once common and very painful practice of taking bone from their hip to use around the spine. Today’s spine surgeries require smaller incisions and are more precise than ever before.
Another piece of technology at our physician’s disposal that has resulted in better outcomes for Saint Agnes patients is a neuromonitoring device that can detect possible issues with nerves during back or spine surgery. Overall, this allows for a greater level of control when spinal instrumentation is used.
Depending on your injury and diagnosis, your doctor will recommend a specific spine treatment path for you. Options may include non-surgical and/or surgical procedures, such as the following.
- Epidural steroid injections
- Facet blocks
- Cervical and lumbar traction
- Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation (TENS)
Cervical disc replacements
A goal of this procedure it to relieve the pain caused by pinched nerves due to a damaged disc in the cervical spine. The damaged disc will be replaced with an artificial disc between two of the cervical vertebrae thus alleviating pressure on the spinal cord or affected nerve. This disc replacement procedure helps to preserve the motion of the spine.
The intervertebral foramina is an opening between adjacent vertebrae that allows nerves to pass to and from the spinal cord. If this passage is being obstructed, or the nerve is being pinched by a bone or disc, surgery may be required. Our surgeons alleviate this issue with a minimally invasive foraminotomy procedure, which entails using an arthroscope to remove the obstruction.
This procedure is performed through an incision on the lower back. The surgeon removes a section of bone, called the lamina, from one or more vertebrae. This relieves pressure on the nerve roots of your spine caused by stenosis.
Kyphoplasty / Vertebroplasty
These procedures involve the injection of a type of cement mixture into a fractured vertebrae through the use of a hollow needle and the guidance of imaging technology. The purpose of this procedure is to relieve compression of the fractured the bone that causes pain. Kyphoplasty differs from vertebroplasty in that a balloon is first utilized to create space in the bone.
A surgeon removes a small piece of the lamina and scrapes out protruding disk material.
Microsurgery can be used successfully on a small disk bulge pressing on a branch of the sciatic nerve. It offers advantages over conventional surgery, including a shorter hospital stay, fewer complications and less postoperative pain.
Spinal cord stimulators for chronic pain
In this procedure electronic leads and a power supply are implanted that enable regular, electric stimulation of the spinal cord.
This operation involves a bone graft (usually bone from the pelvis and chips from the spine) to fuse to the lower spinal vertebrae and prevent painful motion of the spine. Months of casting and bracing are required to immobilize the back and promote a solid fusion. Our surgeons perform this surgery as minimally invasively as possible.
