PERSONALIZED SOLUTIONS FOR BACK PAIN AND SPINAL ISSUES
Eight of 10 Americans will experience a lifestyle-altering episode of back pain at some point in their lives. Ninety percent of single episodes of back pain become recurrent. While certain diseases and traumatic injury can cause back pain, research shows that the most common causes of back pain or injury are:
- Poor physical condition
- Poor posture
- Improper body mechanics
- Prolonged repetitive use of incorrect bending or lifting techniques.
At the Orthopaedic & Spine Institute at Saint Agnes Hospital, preventing and providing relief for back pain and spinal disorders is one of our specialties. We apply our clinical expertise to establish an accurate diagnosis quickly and develop a plan of care that fits the needs of each patient suffering from a spinal injury. It is our practice to exhaust every appropriate treatment option before considering spine surgery.
If surgery is required our physicians utilize the most minimally invasive procedures available to maximize the benefits of spine surgery with the least amount of risk, and to ensure a quick and full recovery and a solution that will last a lifetime.
If a surgical procedure becomes the right choice, our team of specialists is trained to effectively correct the problem.
Our team specializes in the treatment of:
- Traumatic and overuse injuries to the spine
- Spinal deformities, both acquired and congenital
- Whiplash injuries
- Systemic diseases affecting spinal function
- Degenerative spinal conditions
- Spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis
- Herniated disc lesions
- Soft tissue sprains, strains, and contusions

The Saint Agnes Comprehensive Spine Center wants to work with you to regain independence, mobility, and freedom from pain.
How Long Will I Be In The Hospital Following My Spine Surgery?
Typically following a spine surgery, you will have up to a three-day stay in the acute care hospital. During your acute care stay, you will meet with a case manager, who will assist you with your discharge plans. Based on your recovery status, the rehabilitation staff, and your physician will provide you with discharge recommendations.
How Can I Progress While In The Hospital?
During the first few days following surgery, you must rely on the hospital staff to assist you with many things. However, during this time, you can assist with your recovery in the following ways:
- Drink plenty of fluid
- Perform ankle pumps and deep breathing exercises frequently while awake
- Actively participate in your rehabilitation program
How Will I Manage My Pain After The Surgery?
Your spine surgeon can prescribe medication, or suggest therapy to control your pain.
Does My Insurance Cover The Cost Of Rehabilitation Or Home Care After I Leave The Hospital?
Some insurance providers do not cover these services, even if your doctor or physical therapist has recommended them. Call your insurance company in advance of your surgery to determine if these services are covered. Whether or not you are a candidate for rehabilitation or home care depends on your progress after surgery. Many insurance providers do not cover hospital beds, wheelchairs, tub chairs or grab bars for patients who have had spine surgery.
How Soon After Surgery Will My Pain, Numbness, Weakness Or Tingling Be Alleviated?
Every patient’s recovery and results are different. Typically, you will notice changes within two weeks after spine surgery. However, it may be longer.
How Long Until I Can Return To My Normal Activities Following Surgery?
Typically, spinal surgery patients will be limited in their daily activities due to use of a brace for an average of six to 12 weeks. Within six months, you may be able to resume most of your pre-surgical activities, based on your physician’s recommendations.
