Saint Agnes Hospital and Associated Italian American Charities of Maryland, Inc. Announces 2011 Nursing Scholarship Award Winners

Saint Agnes Hospital and the Associated Italian American Charities of Maryland, Inc. (AIAC) recently announced Christiana Casey and Allison Jones have been awarded the 2011 AIAC Nursing scholarship, which awards the recipients up to a $10,000 annual scholarship and an invitation to join Saint Agnes Hospital’s nursing staff upon completion of his/her degree.

“These aspiring nurses represent the future of the nursing profession,” said Eugenia Powell, Assistant Vice President, Professional Practice, Nursing Excellence & Research at Saint Agnes. “Their dedication to their studies and commitment to make a difference in the world by helping others will be an asset to the nursing field and to Saint Agnes.”

Christiana Casey is a rising junior at Stevenson University and plans to graduate with a BS in Nursing in 2013. She is active in her community both as a camp counselor and cheerleader for her school. Given her love of children, she aspires to become a pediatrics nurse and give children with fears the best hospital experience possible.

Allison Jones is a rising senior at Towson University and plans to pursue her graduate degree after receiving her BS in Nursing. She is active in school as a class officer for her nursing class and three time varsity softball captain. Her experience both as a patient and as a visitor to family members in the hospital solidified her decision to make nursing her lifelong profession.

Consideration for this award was given to applicants who reside in the state of Maryland, are currently enrolled in a state-accredited, nursing program and are a junior or senior in college pursuing a bachelor’s degree, with preference given to those of Italian heritage. All applicants had to submit an application, essay, transcript and letter of reference.

This award is made possible through a mutually beneficial and supportive relationship between Saint Agnes Hospital and the AIAC. The AIAC has contributed to patient care initiatives and enhancements at Saint Agnes in recent years and the hospital has returned support by sponsoring the AIAC’s with this grant and other various activities. AIAC, the ninth largest charitable organization in the state of Maryland, holds fundraising events throughout the year with a goal to support charitable organizations and provide scholarships to individuals of Italian descent.

“Allison and Christiana exemplify all that is positive about providing positive role models for others who wish to enter the nursing profession,” said Eric Johnson, AIAC member. “Their scholastic achievements, contributions to the community, commitment to nursing, in addition to embracing their Italian heritage, have earned them both the recognition of their peers and these nursing scholarships. The AIAC, in conjunction with St. Agnes Hospital is extremely proud of Allison and Christiana and extremely pleased to support them both in awarding these scholarships through our members charitable giving for scholarships and grants.”
