Statement from Saint Agnes Hospital Regarding the
Cardinal Gibbons Property

Saint Agnes Hospital announced today that they have agreed to purchase the historical property where the Cardinal Gibbons High School was located from the Archdiocese of Baltimore to create a development of mixed-use services that are consistent with Catholic values and will compliment the community.

Discussions between Saint Agnes and the Archdiocese about the purchase of the property began in December 2011 after the Archdiocese determined other offers did not satisfy their desire to create an environment that is respectful and inclusive of the surrounding community.

“For 150 years, Saint Agnes Hospital has been committed to creating an environment that benefits the community we serve,” said Bonnie Phipps, President and CEO of Saint Agnes. “We are fortunate that our neighbors, the Archdiocese of Baltimore and Catholic Charities share the same commitment and values.”

Saint Agnes will develop the Cardinal Gibbons property as a vibrant space, expanding services to our existing community. Saint Agnes has engaged with key community members to ensure the creation of an environment that is respectful to those who left their fingerprint on this community. As Saint Agnes enters into a comprehensive study period, discussions have begun with a number of community members at large and potential partners, including representatives of Catholic Charities, the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation and Cardinal Gibbons Alumni. The overall goal of the project is to create a space that is inviting, welcoming and supportive to all community members. A current concept for the property involves a courtyard commemorating Cardinal Gibbons as well as highlighting the property’s baseball history and ties to Babe Ruth through the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, which will preserve and enhance the use of the baseball field where Babe Ruth played for St. Mary’s Industrial School.

Additional ideas for the property include recreational community space, an office building and housing for hospital and community residents.

“Saint Agnes is committed to providing a space that brings additional benefits to the community,” said William Greskovich, Vice President of Operation and Capital Projects, “and we expect to continue to engage our neighbors in the months and years ahead to ensure complementary uses of this historical land.”
