A Vibrant, Learning Environment
The full time and voluntary faculty have a strong commitment to resident teaching. This often occurs in an informal setting most conducive to learning. The dynamic interaction between the faculty and house staff creates a stimulating intellectual environment centered around the key principles of patient care, education and clinical research.
The house staff have the autonomy in patient care essential to development of their clinical skills, yet have the close faculty supervision and support that they need.
Saint Agnes is an affiliate of the University of Maryland Medical School and Johns Hopkins Medical School. This affords our house staff the opportunity to rotate through these hospitals, further enriching their patient care experience.
In addition to patient care, house staff are actively involved in the teaching of medical students who rotate on the medical service throughout the year.
Research activity is emphasized, and the house staff are strongly encouraged to become involved in clinical research. Saint Agnes has an established Clinical Research Center with a physician director, a full time administrator and several full time study coordinators. Many of the residents participate in projects, working closely with the various attendings in the department. These projects include clinical vignettes, scientific papers and poster presentations. They may be submitted either for publication in a journal or to the annual Maryland ACP Associates Scientific Meeting at which the program is always well represented.

Our mission is to train superb physicians who are prepared for the clinical, academic and administrative challenges of practicing in the 21st century, no matter what path they choose, whether in primary care or subspecialty, in an academic center or office practice setting. We are committed to providing outstanding clinical training and personalized career mentoring in a stimulating intellectual environment focused on teamwork and excellent, safe patient care.
We achieve this mission by providing clinical experiences with an extremely diverse case mix of patients in a nurturing and supportive environment with a careful balance of progressive supervised autonomy.
